Joel Maxman

Joel Maxman represents both landlords and tenants in the negotiation of retail and leases for spaces ranging in size from partial floors through several hundred thousand square feet. Recently, Joel represented the landlord in the leasing of a 600,000 square foot shopping center in Brooklyn, New York, and the purchaser in the acquisition of a 99-year ground lease for the redevelopment and leasing of over 900,000 square feet of retail space in Bronx, New York.

Joel has been involved in financings of commercial properties from the borrowers' and lenders' sides. He has closed on the acquisitions, sales and financings of office buildings, shopping centers and hotel/motel sites in both one-off and multiple-site transactions.

Joel has been a real estate attorney since 1984. He practiced for over ten years at Rosenman & Colin (now known as Katten Muchin Rosenman) and for four years at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. For three years, he was general counsel to Greenman Bros. Inc., owner of a 400-unit retail toy store chain.

Joel has lectured on commercial leasing in continuing legal education programs sponsored by the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and has led commercial leasing seminars for small business owners and entrepreneurs in a program organized by the Harlem office of BRISC (an arm of the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone and the Small Business Administration). He previously taught real estate law in a paralegal certificate program.
